Jon Etra passes on this notice of the United Nations Association of Boulder County

UN Association of BC: Oct 4, Tuesday 4-6PM BPL Boulder Creek Room

Dr. Douglas Snyder will be speaking on “The Future of Refugee Support.” Doug received his Ph.D. in History from the University of Colorado Boulder, specializing in the history of U.S. foreign policy, particularly during the Cold War era. He is a faculty member in CU’s Program in International Affairs and directs the Global Studies Residential Academic Program, and he teaches a wide range of courses in these programs.

Doug’s research bridges U.S., European, and Asian history to contribute to the ongoing movement toward internationalization by American historians. More broadly, he investigates how the United States deals with the legacies of colonialism and challenges to its understanding of the global Cold War. Out of his broad portfolio of research interests, he will focus Tuesday's discussion on what the future holds for an increasing number of refugees world wide.

Quote from the article "The Case for Accepting Defeat on Roe":

Often forgotten is that R.B.G. herself had decided that Roe was a mistake. In 1992, she gave a lecture musing that the country might be better off if the Supreme Court had written a narrower decision and opened up a “dialogue” with state legislatures, which were trending “toward liberalization of abortion statutes” (to quote the Roe court). Roe “halted a political process that was moving in a reform direction and thereby, I believe, prolonged divisiveness and deferred stable settlement of the issue,” Justice Ginsburg argued. In the process, “a well-organized and vocal right-to-life movement rallied and succeeded, for a considerable time, in turning the legislative tide in the opposite direction.”
